YouTube is a video-sharing website that is changing American culture. It seems that every day, some short video clip on YouTube makes headline news. Here’s the story behind the phenomenal success of YouTube, and some tips on how you can join the fun.

YouTube: 100 Million Videos Strong

Youtube was created by three pals from PayPal - Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim - who raised $3.5 million in venture capital to debut their open exchange video site in November 2005. Less than a year later, Google bought YouTube for $1.65 billion. Can you say “cha ching?”
The concept is brilliantly simple. People post videos on YouTube and watch and comment on the videos others have posted. The videos can be anything from a simple rant into a cell phone camera by a frustrated teenager to a favorite sports clip Tivo’d off of ESPN - and everything in between. The numbers generated by YouTube are staggering. One hundred million videos are on the YouTube servers, with 65,000 new ones uploaded every day. They’re watched by 20 million viewers a month.
The simplicity of the technology has aided its popularity. YouTube uses the popular Macromedia FlashPlayer 7 and the Sorenson Spark H.263 codec - which offers the combined quality of Windows Media Player and Apple’s QuickTime without the need to download additional browser plug-ins. In simpler terms, you click and the video plays… period.

The YouTube Community

Youtube is a true global community - with numerous user groups and contests to encourage users to create their own videos, reachable through the “Community” button on any page. The contests might focus on ways to spend a tax refund, telling your darkest secrets, or creating a new music video and some have large cash prizes.
Youtube discourages users from downloading videos to their own computers, preferring that they watch videos online. However, you may embed videos in your own website. Copy the code from the embed box found under “About this Video” on the right while the video is playing. Copy the code, then paste it into your website or blog to embed it.
There are a number of other video sharing sites - including Google Video, UnCut Video on AOL, Vimeo, EyeSpot and VideoEgg. < target=”_blank” a href=”http://revver.com/”>Revver is a popular choice for video producers who want to explore ways to earn money for their work. Video on the web is growing exponentially, but so far nothing can match the cultural impact or enormous volume of YouTube.

First, let me tell about Registry.

The Registry is a database of nearly all the settings for Windows and your installed applications. The following is a brief collection of information, tips, and troubleshooting techniques involving the Windows Registry.

How the Registry is stored

In Windows 95, 98, and Me, the Registry is contained in two hidden files in your Windows directory, called USER.DAT and SYSTEM.DAT.

In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the Registry is stored in several Hives, located in the \windows\system32\config and \Documents and Settings\{username} folders.

Structure of the Registry
The Registry has a hierarchal structure, like the directories on your hard disk. Each branch (denoted by a folder icon in the Registry Editor, see below) is called a Key. Each key can contain other keys, as well as Values. Each value contains the actual information stored in the Registry. There are three types of values; String, Binary, and DWORD - the use of these depends upon the context.

There are six main branches (five in Windows 2000 and Windows XP), each containing a specific portion of the information stored in the Registry. They are as follows:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - this branch contains all of your file types as well as OLE information for all your OLE-aware applications.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER - this branch points to the part of HKEY_USERS appropriate for the current user.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - this branch contains information about all of the hardware and software installed on your computer. Since you can specify multiple hardware configurations, the current hardware configuration is specified in HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG.

HKEY_USERS - this branch contains certain preferences (such as colors and control panel settings) for each of the users of the computer. In Windows 95/98/Me, the default branch here contains the currently-logged in user. In Windows 2000/XP, the default branch here contains a template to be used for newly-added users.

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG - this branch points to the part of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE appropriate for the current hardware configuration.

HKEY_DYN_DATA (Windows 95/98/Me only) - this branch points to the part of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, for use with Windows’ Plug-&-Play subsystem.

What is Registry Editor ?
The Registry Editor (regedit.exe) is included with Windows to enable you to view and edit the contents of the Registry. When you open the Registry Editor, you’ll see a window divided into two panes. The left side shows a tree with folders (see Structure of the Registry above), and the right side shows the contents (values) of the currently selected folder (key).

To expand a certain branch, click on the little plus sign [+] to the left of any folder, or just double-click on the folder. To display the contents of a key (folder), just click the desired key, and look at the values listed on the right side. You can add a new key or value by selecting New from the Edit menu. You can rename any value and almost any key with the same method used to rename files; right-click on an object and click rename, or click on it twice (slowly), or just press F2 on the keyboard. Lastly, you can delete a key or value by clicking on it, and pressing Delete on the keyboard, or by right-clicking on it, and choosing Delete.

Importing, Exporting, and Applying Registry Patches
Although you can edit the Registry with the Registry Editor (see above), you can also make changes by using Registry patches. A Registry patch is a simple text file with the .REG extension that contains one or more keys or values. If you double-click on a .REG file, the patch is applied to the registry. This is a good way to share or back up small portions of the registry for use on your own computer, or someone else’s, because (among other reasons) it’s much simpler and less dangerous than manually editing the Registry.

You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad (right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry patch file (or use Import in the Registry Editor’s File menu) to apply it to the registry.

Note : It is always advisable to back up your registry before making any changes to it. Note that the Registry is intended to be a little intimidating, because it is possible to screw up your entire system if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you back up the Registry before continuing, you eliminate this possibility.

To back up the Registry in Windows 95/98/Me, just make copies of the registry files (described below). In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, you’ll need special backup software to make an effective and complete Registry backup.

Your other alternative is to use Registry Patches (see below) to back up portions of the registry before editing.

Now,

How to use it?

How to restore computer to previous setting?

How to make Restore Point?

Those questions would be answer for future posts, be patient.

Spyware infects your system faster and easier than you would ever imagine. Think you’re immune just because you don’t have any of spyware signs? You should think again. Do you do online? If you do any of the following and don’t have an anti-spyware or adware program on your computer, you probably have them on your computer, or if you doing something like this:

a)     Send and receive email;

b)     Download music, movies, or games;

c)      Download free programs and utilities;

d)     Use any instant messaging services;

e)     Use any file sharing programs;

Being online means that you perform at least one of these activities. Otherwise, what would be the point of hanging out in cyberspace?

Besides, it’s human nature to be attracted to something “free” – and the internet has free information, free music, free games, and free system utility systems. The problem is, we forget two basic rules that apply to almost everything in life, including the internet:

There’s a sucker born every minute; and

If it sounds too good to be true, it is.

So, how does spyware infect your computer? They have many methods to infiltrate and infect your computer with their spyware scourge. In many cases, you thought you were downloading one thing and you got more than you bargained for. Other times you agree, unknowingly, to put them on your computer. Or you think you’re fixing the problem, when in fact, you’re actually inviting them into your system.

ColdFusion is an application server and software language used for Internet application development. Such as ASP, JSP and PHP. The Scripting Language is called ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML).

The main advantage of ColdFusion is it’s simplicity, wich has also has been it’s main target for criticism. The CFML looks like HTML syntaxes, wich is a main advantage for newbies who just learnt HTML.But it main advantage comes with all it’s features. Well, let’s take a look at it’s Release History to give you an idea of what i’m talking about.

1995 : Allaire Cold Fusion version 1.0
1996 : Allaire Cold Fusion version 1.5
1996 : Allaire Cold Fusion version 2.0
1997-Jun : Allaire Cold Fusion version 3.0
1998-Jan : Allaire Cold Fusion version 3.1
1998-Nov : Allaire ColdFusion version 4.0 (space eliminated between Cold and Fusion to make it ColdFusion)
1999-Nov : Allaire ColdFusion version 4.5
2001-Jun : Macromedia ColdFusion version 5.0
2002-May : Macromedia ColdFusion MX version 6.0 (build 6,0,0,48097), Updater 1 (build 6,0,0,52311), Updater 2 (build 6,0,0,55693), Updater 3 (build 6,0,0,58500)
2003-Oct : Macromedia ColdFusion MX version 6.1 (build 6,1,0,63958), Updater 1 (build 6,1,0,83762)
2005 : Macromedia ColdFusion MX 7 (build 7,0,0,91690), 7.0.1 (build 7,0,1,116466), 7.0.2 (build 7,0,2,142559)
2007-Jul-30 : Adobe ColdFusion 8 (build 8,0,0,176276)
2008-Apr-04 : Adobe ColdFusion 8.0.1 (build 8,0,1,195765)

(taken from Wikipedia)

The interesting thing is that Allaire became Macromedia became Adobe, something ironic considering that Macromedia and Adobe were competiting agains each other (as ironic as seeing Autodesk Maya on Shelves). A good thing for ColdFusion, wich now has many of Macromedia ’s trademarks like Flash Forms and Flash Charts integrated into it as well as Adobe’s Image processing. Besides that, ColdFusion runs on Java, meaning that it can work on different Platforms. As for Database integration, ColdFusion is able o communicate with Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, Microsoft Access and many others, but if that isn’t enough ColdFusion also supports ODBC. The only thing that bothers me about ColdFusion is the Price, it’s quite Expensive.

Let me show you a Hello World Script below :

<cfoutput>Hello World</cfoutput>

Having used ColdFusion for 2.5 years by myself, i have to say that the abilities of ColdFusion still suprise me. Hopefully i can share more of my knowledge of using ColdFusion in my next Posts, in the How To Category.

Google Adsense is the most recognized of all the Internet advertisement applications out there. Let’s face it, these days anything that has the Google Logo in front of it has a higher rate of being known than others. So what is Google Adsense and how does it work?

Like said before Google Adsense is an advertisement application wich can be integrated into your Website or Blog. It works pretty simple, all you have to do is :

Apply to Google Adsense

Get the code from the adsense menu

Insert the Code into your Blog or Website

Wait for the money to come

That sounds pretty easy doesn’t it? Well if it we’re that simple, everyone ever applied would be a millionaire right now. But that isn’t the case. In order to get money, a visitor has “to click” your Google Ad, thus the term “Pay Per Click (PPC)”. And that is the hard part.

When u search the Web, you’ll find many sites of people who will try to sell u their “Guaranteed to make XXXXXXX from Adsense in X days” Formula. And there are many SEO (Search Engine Optimizer) Gurus out there who can tell u how to create traffic to your site.

So where does the money come from? Let’s look at how adsense works. Below is a Block Diagram :

Do you feel Dizy looking at it? I’ll be honest, i do. So let me explain it in a more simpler way.

Advertisers wants to make Money from their Product on their site, so they want more people to come visit (more traffic) wich will increase the possibility that somebody’s gotta purchase their product.

Advertisers joins Google AdWords, gives a certain amount of money to Google and buys certain Key Words, so Google will put their Ads on somebody’s site with relative content so that the traffic increases.

A Publisher joins Google AsSense and puts the generated Code into their Site.

A Visitor Clicks on the Link.

The Publisher gets Money and the Advertiser gets Traffic

Everybody is Happy

Google AdSense is currently available in these formats :

AdSense for Content, the most common Ad. This can be in Text and Images (Banners)

AdSense for Search, having the Google Search engine embbeded on your site is a neat feature, and also it will display some additional adds.

AdSense for Feeds, Ads can also be put on your Feeds.

A system monitor observes the activities you performed on your computer. It captures your bank account information, usernames, passwords, and credit card numbers and then sends it to other websites. Naturally, this is done without your knowledge.

System monitors can infect your system through bogus emails or instant messaging viruses. Once infected, the hacker has access to do whatever he wants while in control of your system.

Once loaded onto your computer, the spyware starts doing its damage.

These types of software are usually in popular, free downloads. They also usually contain at least one Stalking Horse (defined later) and software for ad-serving networks. Sometimes the company asks you if you want to install these stalking horses or ad-serving programs, but usually they are hidden in the fine print of the license agreement and you agree without even knowing it. You have to agree to everything in that agreement because, in some situations, if you choose not to install the spyware you will not be able to use the main program. Examples of programs that are Trojan Horses are KaZaa, Grokster, and Morpheus.

Cookies

You might hear some people argue that cookies are not spyware at all because most of them have a legitimate purpose – to help the owners of web sites save your personal settings and customizations so that when you return to the site it will be tailored to your tastes and interests. However, I delete cookies all the time and I’ve never had trouble when I go back to my favorite sites.

Cookies are also used by advertisers to track sales and clicks to better understand how best to spend their marketing budget.

For example, if you are reading a news story about your favorite football team, on that page you might see an advertisement or a text link directing you to a site where you can get a jersey of your favorite team. Well, your team just won an important game, so naturally you want one now! And it’s a good price! So you click on this link and make the purchase.

The advertiser then knows that the site you came from is a good place to spend money advertising. If the link is ignored, they will not continue to advertise on that site. Without cookies, companies would be blindly throwing money at advertising opportunities without any way of knowing if it is effective.

Adware

Adware programs are free to use but they have advertisements built into the software. When you run the program, it pulls down advertisements from the Internet and displays them somewhere in the software.

Double Click, Value Click, Gain, and Radiate are among networks that use this method.

Backdoor Santas

These programs can have valid uses, but they also collect information about how you use your computer, such as the sites you visit and the type of your hardware and transmit it back to their servers. They generally do not work with adware networks. Comet Cursor, Alexa, and Hotbar are examples of Backdoor Santas.

Stalking Horses

Stalking Horses let adware networks send ads to your computer. They are generally bundled into a program, offered as an addition they make you think you need in the installation of the main software.

Browser Hijackers

Browser Hijackers change your homepage and, no matter how many times you change it back to what you want, they change it back. It’s not just your homepage they take over. When you do a search in Google, hijackers will send your request to another search engine. Your computer has been hijacked.

Why do they do this? Money. They send you to a site where they may gain a commission for the user going there or to increase traffic, thereby generating higher ad revenue.

Dialers

Dialers make their money by connecting your computer through your phone line to other computers, which are usually porn sites. Since these numbers are pay per call, you get charged for the time. It’s generally quite a shock when you receive your phone bill.

Commercial Spyware

Spyware also includes commercial tools like keyloggers and network management tools, which are used in large corporations to keep an eye on employees. Sometimes this software is misused, such as when hackers steal someone’s password to obtain access to the computer system.

Keyloggers

A Keylogger is a program that records all your keystrokes, then hidden in the machine for later retrieval, or shipped right away to the attacker. From these keystrokes, the bad guys will try to find passwords or other information that could be used in an attack. For example, a key logger can reveal the contents of e-mail you’ve written. Keylog programs are commonly included in Trojans.

Phishing

Phishing is when an email is sent to you that claims to be a real business when in fact it is trying to scam you into giving out your private information to be used for identity theft.

Usually the email says that the reader must visit a web site to update or verify personal information, like credit card numbers, passwords, social security numbers, etc. Unfortunately, the web site is fraud, and only wants to steal your identity and information.

Two of the most recent, well-known phishing scams were the emails from a bank, like Sun Trust or Chase. Many people thought the bank was really sending them an email and fell for this scam – sending personal information like bank accounts, password and social security numbers to the bad guys. Another famous phishing scam were emails purportedly from eBay claiming that the user’s account was about to be suspended unless he clicked on the link and updated the credit card information.

It’s easy to make a site look like it’s the real thing, and many people thought they were really being contacted by eBay and were connecting to eBay’s real site to update information.

Do you know spyware?

Spyware is software that installs itself into a computer without the user’s knowledge or consent. While in there, it uses the computer to make money (but not for you!) or acquire your personal information for fraudulent purposes.

It’s hard for some of us to believe, but these adware or spyware companies do make a lot of money by signing up as an affiliate or reseller for other companies. When you purchase one of their items, the spyware or adware companies receive a commission, or percentage, of the sale.

This is generally done through those annoying pop-ups - but they also employ more covert and less noticeable methods to ensure they receive credit for generating sales for these merchants.

Although many spyware infections are only meant to make the creator of the program money without stealing your credit card information, social security number or your identity, they still invade your privacy.

So, where did this all start?

Were the bad guys just waiting around for the internet to be invented so they can cause you problems? No one will know that for certain.

All that is known is that spyware begun years ago with cookies. Not the cookies that come out of your oven, but the small files that download to your computer to send information back to its website so the website would be more user-friendly. These cookies were meant to help you in viewing and using the site.

Today, these cookies are probably sending your personal information back to marketing databases or another company that watches what you do on the net.

You can get spyware through free software that you download from a company. It’s free to you because that’s how the company gets statistics about you and all the other users, their computers and their hardware and software. This information could be sold to another organization and you would never know it.
